Top Tips for a Stress Free Appointment
Let’s make this simple from the start: a bridal appointment should feel enjoyable, calm, and a little bit exciting—not like a high-pressure performance where you’re expected to make the “perfect” choice under a spotlight. Here at Encore Pre-Loved Bridal, the appointments that go best are always the ones where brides come in with a relaxed mindset, a bit of curiosity, and the understanding that this is a process, not a test you have to pass in one go.
1 - Pick your Crew Wisely
One of the biggest factors in how your appointment feels is who you bring with you. It’s very tempting to turn it into a group outing, but too many people quickly becomes too many opinions, and that noise can drown out your own instinct. We always suggest keeping your group small—one to three people you genuinely trust—and, more importantly, people who care more about how you feel in the dress than what they personally think of it. The right people will help you tune in to yourself, not pull you in five different directions.
2 - Set your Budget (and stick to it)
It also helps enormously to know your budget before you arrive—and to stick to it. Trying on dresses outside of your budget might seem harmless “just to see,” but it very often leads to falling in love with something that isn’t realistic, which only creates unnecessary stress. There are beautiful options at every price point, and working within your budget from the beginning keeps the whole experience grounded, positive, and actually enjoyable.
3 - Be Open Minded
When it comes to style, a little openness goes a long way. You’re absolutely welcome to come in with ideas, but try not to hold onto them too tightly. We see it all the time—brides arrive convinced they want one very specific look and leave having chosen something completely different. Not because they were wrong, but because dresses behave differently on your body than they do in your imagination. Being willing to try a range of shapes, fabrics, and styles gives you a much better chance of finding something that genuinely feels right.
Also, be aware that your alterations seamstress/tailor is your bestie here - That exact perfect dress may not exist for you but they can add sleeves, create a bustle, change necklines add embellishments…. basically they are your fairy godmother and one of the most important people in helping you to achieve the final look that you want
4 - Account for Alterations
On a practical level, if you already know whether you’ll be wearing heels or flats, it can be helpful to bring something similar along, but don’t worry if you haven’t decided yet—many people haven’t, and that choice often comes later. What is worth knowing in advance is that almost all dresses will need some level of alteration to get that perfect fit, and this is a normal part of the process. Be aware that costs can vary wildly from as little as £50 to £1000 or more depending on what you’d like adjusted or added so there are no surprises later on.
5 - Throw Some Shapes
You’re going to be in it all day so how you feel in a dress is just as important as how you look. Can you move in it? Is it itchy? Can you sit or dance in it? We encourage you to move around in the dress, not just stand like a statue in front of the mirror. As well as comfort, what feelings does the dress evoke in you? Do you feel beautiful? Sexy? Romantic? Does this match how you want to feel on your wedding day?
6 - Be Honest
Your feedback dictates the next dress we pull for you so honesty is really important. Usually your bridal consultant didnt design or make the dresses so please dont worry about offending them by saying you hate it. The more honest you are - the quicker and closer we get to what you really want
And while we’re here, it’s worth saying gently that not every bride has that dramatic, tearful “this is the one” moment you see in films. Sometimes it happens, but very often the decision is quieter—a calm, confident feeling that this is the right choice. Both are completely valid.
